Floral Tips by Krista Piper

Hello everyone!  I am so excited to be writing a guest blog post for Brit Clicks Photography.  I always enjoy helping people and knowing that I am helping her couples find cost saving tips for flowers on your wedding day are awesome!   I actually started out in photography and still do photography, but I have always had a love for flowers.   Creating floral arrangements, bouquets, growing flowers in my garden… if it has anything to do with flowers, then I have most likely done it! I think one of the main reasons I love flowers is flowers make people happy!

Everyone loves flowers, whether it is roses, orchids, eucalyptus, lisianthus, peonies… everyone in the world has at least one flower that they adore and love.  I love growing peonies. They are probably one of my favorite flowers to grow because they are so easy! I have six pink peony bushes and come May my garden is just bursting at the seams with peonies.  Peonies are actually one of the more expensive flowers to use in arrangements, and even more expensive if you are able to get them out of season.  Having gorgeous flowers at your wedding day does not need to break the bank.  You don’t have to say no to flowers either just because they do not fit into your budget. There are several ways to make them fit in your budget and add gorgeous flowers to your wedding day!

Here are my six best cost saving tips for wedding flowers

1. Use flowers that are in season:

It is much more economical to work with flowers that are in season and readily available, versus flowers that are not in season.  Sometimes it is very hard to get flowers that are not in season, or you can get them, but they will be very expensive. Working with a florist or finding a chart online for seasonal flowers will give you a good idea of what flowers will be available for your wedding day.

2.  Swap out expensive flowers for less expensive alternatives:

A great example of this is peonies.  Peonies are gorgeous, smell amazing and provide a nice soft texture to a flower bouquet.  They can also be a little more on the pricey side; a great alternative is a garden or cabbage rose.  They open just as big, have textured and layered rose petals, and smell amazing! You can get them in several peachy and pink colors to match the classic blush pink peony and you will never even notice the difference!

3. Use lots of greenery in the bouquet and arrangements:

Greenery is usually cheaper then flowers, it add a lots of texture and depth to a floral bouquet. Greenery will add more bulk to the bouquet and arrangements, which means, you can save by not having to put that many blooms in the bouquet. Luckily, a lot of greenery in bouquets and arrangements is on trend for weddings right now.

4.  If you are making your own bouquet:

The most expensive flower should be the focal point of your arrangement.  Showcasing the best flower and blooms as the main point means that in photos, walking down the aisle and on the tables, the best flower will be what everyone sees.  You will be able to fill in the remaining portion of the bouquet with more economical flowers.  Just make sure that the main flowers are always prominent in the bouquet and don’t get lost.

5.  Look in a friend’s garden:

Remember how I talked about having an overabundance of peonies in May due to my six bushes?  Chat with some of your friends and family members to find out if anyone is growing the flowers you want in their garden! This is a perfect option because most likely they will happily give you the flowers freely! Having flowers from a family garden is not only cost effective, but is a nice personal touch to your bouquet as well!

6.   You want help from a florist without breaking the bank:

There are local and online floral wholesalers who will order the flowers you need, and then either teach you in person, or online, how to arrangement the flowers in your bridal bouquet and bridesmaids bouquets.  This is a good option if you have the guiding hand of a florist, but want to make the bouquets yourself.

I hope these tips for how to make gorgeous floral arrangements on a budget will help you on your wedding day.  If you ever need any help with your wedding flowers feel free to contact me and I will happily answer your questions!   I love seeing happy couples on their wedding days with gorgeous flowers in their hands!  Thank you so much for letting me share my knowledge with you!
